Shuanghe 110kV Substation Launches in Wenjiang: Powering Pharma Hub & Industrial Growth

The 11th 110kV public substation in Wenjiang District—Shuanghe Substation Officially Commences Operation

As a national urban-rural integration development pilot zone and a hub for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, Wenjiang District has seen continuously rising electricity demand. In 2024, the total industrial electricity consumption reached 1.15 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of approximately 4%. Located in the core area of Wenjiang High-Tech Zone, the Shuanghe 110kV substation serves leading enterprises such as WuXi AppTec, WuXi Biologics, Tongrui Biopharma, and Kanghua Biological. The region’s peak load is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 13% in the coming years. Previously, the area relied on four substations—Haike, Datian, Sports City, and Yongquan—but faced challenges such as extended power supply radii and declining end-point power quality, limiting industrial upgrading.

The operational Shuanghe Substation now provides high-reliability power guarantees and dual power supply support for key projects, meeting the industrial electricity demand in Wenjiang High-Tech Zone for the next 2-3 years.

“At the 15th Plenary Session of the 13th District Committee and the District Economic Work Conference, we emphasized ‘systematically restructuring the economic geography of the four major zones,’ with Wenjiang High-Tech Zone as the first flagship. The construction of the Shuanghe Substation aligns with the district’s decisions and serves as a critical measure to balance regional development and strengthen the central core,” stated an official from the District Economy and Information Bureau.

During the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan period, the bureau will collaborate with State Grid Wenjiang Power Supply Company to advance grid construction. Plans include building one 220kV substation and four 110kV substations, ensuring reliable power support for Wenjiang’s modern industrial system (biopharmaceuticals, green food, and high-end equipment) and safeguarding livelihoods under the “Wenjiang, One Family” initiative.
